Dear Students,
I have recently taken a class in infromatics for nursing educators. I have learned so much from this course about technology and how I can use it with my students. I have learned to be creative and present information in a fun and interactive way. The days of a boring power point are officially over. I can present an audio powerpoint that will not bore students to death. I have created xtranormal personalities, VOKI personalities and so much more. I hope that you will embrace technology as I have and use it in your future studies.

The picture on Saturday is an example of how nursing is supposed to work. Teamwork and supporting one another as we care for our patients. Let us enjoy the profession of nursing and commit to eliminate horizontal violence for this great profession or ours.

This is a good article on Bullying. Bullying is a part of horizontal violence and can be done by manager to nurse, administrator to nurse or nurse to nurse. It is the reason that many nurses leave an organization or the profession altogether.
Here is a website for Bullying in nursing. Bullying can be done from nurse to nurse. Manager to staff nurse and administrator to manager to staff nurse. It is unhealthy for those it is done to and contributes to nurses not only leaving organizations but the profession altogether.
Take a look at this website it is a nurses view of horizontal violence in nursing. Post any comments that you may have.

Horizontal violence is prevalent in nursing.
Take a look at this video by some nurses for nursing students. This video shows the right way and the wrong way to interact with nursing students.

I wanted to share a story. On a surgical floor in a large urban hospital a new graduate nurse was interviewed after thirty days on the floor. The nurse manager asked her at the end of her interview if she had experienced horizontal violence in the first thirty days. The new graduate replied that she had. The nurse manager probed her for details and the new graduate told her that when she was with a more experienced nurse during her orientation she was hammered for four hours. She said she felt like every decision was questioned and she felt like she was being given a test for the time that she spent with this nurse. It is one thing to teach a new graduate, but to put a new nurse through the paces when they are orienting to the floor is horizontal violence. This time is meant to be nurturing and mentoring. New nurses are like babies, first they crawl, then they walk and then they fly. The first year of a nurses career is the time she/he learns the most. Let us remember that we are nurturing the nurses of tomorrow and each one of us has a responsibility to mentor new nurses and support them. It begins with each one of us.

This blog is designed for nursing students and new graduate nurses. The hope is that when confronted with horizontal violence in nursing, nursing students and graduate nurses will post their stories. Horizontal violence is a blemish on the profession of nursing. It is the aggressive behavior one nurse displays toward another. It is frequently displayed towards student nurses and new graduates. It can be bullying, intimidation, withholding of information, scapegoating, rumors, gossip etc. If student nurses and new graduates can prepare themselves for the behavior when it happens then together nurses can eliminate the behavior from the profession of nursing. Please join me in telling your "story" with the hope that it will help another nurse
